Hand Made Floor Light, made from Korean Silk, and Steel Frame
‘Jogak Light Sculpture’ series reimagines the traditional Korean fabric practice ‘bojagi’. The pieces are made from fabric offcuts, ‘jogak’, that are carefully collected, trimmed and assembled together to form a larger fabric, creating something new and functional from waste. Studio Booboon reinterpreted this traditional practice to create a series of lighting sculptures.
The shade part of the product is wrapped in Korean natural silk called Oksa. Oksa fabric is a type of silk yarn that is made from threads pulled from double silkworm cocoons. Unlike raw silk, rough ridges come out irregularly from the yarn. People say that it looks like a bead, so they call it Oksa, which means "beaded fabric" in Korean. As a result, this textile has an unique aesthetic that evokes a soft and rough texture simultaneously.
